mars; short lived no wave noise that resonates on a cellular level in a haunting sort of way. 11,000 volts; recorded 1978.

fierce social commentary from the fall, 1982, set to a thundering tribal beat and meandering tuneless ukulele.

this video is called charmed life. it's not a very serious video. it was created a few weeks ago, in hawaii, where we were vibing with the jad fair and daniel johnston album 'it's spooky' which is also not very serious. 'first day at work' is not the best song on the album and i did not catch the best waves on the north shore during my stay. i did, however, listen to 'first day at work' nearly every day in the car on the way to foodland or haliewa to get a sandwich. mini would laugh when i put it on. the kind of laugh you do when you're annoyed. we talked about how it would be rad to make a video with it, but he didn't think i was serious. then as it unfolded it just made sense. then we sank deeper into jad fair-ness and finished with two half japanese tracks. in the end it almost seems to make a statement. to speak for itself. we surely never intended on that, but when that shit just happens, you can't argue.

also in other news i've received a lot of positivity concerning 'a declaration of independence' and really appreciate everyone taking the time to read it. i'm aware that i can't see a complete picture of the general response, because i doubt my friends and sponsors would forward me hate mail, and people at the beach could easily tell me they dig it when they didn't, but regardless, the positivity is much appreciated.

bobby goes frontside, mini documents.
enjoying a mediocre day in california midway through a global traverse in seek of new adventures. buzzing on surfing. particularly from julian wilson's fuckin' 4 ft backside varial in france. i think it was in the final. that shit was dope.

this was shot during june/july i believe. trying to overcome some injuries. surfing around ventura a lot. windswell and junk. lately our priorities have shifted toward slightly more ambitious projects... which i'm really psyched about, but marine layer clips are going to suffer a little bit, so please bear with us. radness -dane
this summer i'm, like, psyching on surfing cause i'm trying to get back into it and since the onshores start blowing at about 5:30 AM in ventura, i've been trying to make it to orange county and beyond a little more than normal.

this particular evening was at trestles. 6 foot high tide. decent south swell. first i rode a fiberflex 5'11" but i wasn't getting any drive on those slopey faces. kept getting stuck in the middle of nowhere with no speed.

this video actually starts when i grab a 5'8" which is possibly the end of the road for my obsession with straightening the rail line on short boards. 18 3/4" is the wide point and its 8" up from the center. from there to the tail is straight. like, really straight. it rides like a gerry lopez gun if you cut it in half. it's tricky but sort of rad. you can stomp on the tail and pretend your hoyo.

i'm not sure what kelly was riding but everything looks like a magic carpet under his feet.

this board is ugly. first time ive seen hips at the halfway point. 1 - 1/2"  thick. probably. if you measured it.  i shaped it. kind of embarrassing.  thomas campbell was passing through town. wanted to take some pictures of me shaping a board. he coached me through it. then there was no foam left and hes telling me it needed more vee. "how many boards you shaped thomas?" "awe ,,, one,,, sorta..." the blind leading the blind. hows that for a cliche. first time i rode it was a mess. tense first date. social anxiety. i tried to ride it flat. skating around like a fish. it didnt like that. pretty much did what it wanted. put it away. shelf life.

this is california in july. bored of two foot beachbreaks. inspired after seeing al knosts frantic dance in mexico. channelling davey miller. crank off the bottom. peg the lip. ranger style. due to the lack of symmetry it only turns off the toe side rail. a cutbacks a fight.  but if you adapt and make it work, its fun as hell. and aint that what its about aneeeways?
